SLGR are the first of the London clubs to hold a Para Athletics day, as part of their Inspiration Club funding and Team Personal Best went along with two special guests!
Volunteers from SLGR and their linked RunTogether groups So Let’s Go Running Bexley, Dartford and Gravesend joined together to deliver a Para Athletics day at the David Ives stadium in Erith on 10th September to give disabled people an opportunity to try running or pushing on the track.
The club were joined on the day by Paralympian T11 sprinter Libby Clegg and Paralympian T36 long jumper Ryan Raghoo. Both athletes took an active part in the event, coaching participants and volunteers, giving a talk and answering questions about their background and routes into athletics; Libby brought along her gold medals from Rio, which everybody was interested in seeing and being photographed with and everyone commented on how inspirational both athletes are.
Despite the weather, everyone enjoyed the opportunity and hopefully this event will encourage more disabled people to join in at the sessions at the club or at the So Let’s Go Running sessions based in Bexley, Dartford or Gravesend, which cater for all abilities including complete beginners who haven’t run before.
England Athletics Inspiration Club project is part of Team Personal Best, a campaign throughout the summer of 2017 to inspire a programme of local community activities designed to get people involved in grassroot athletics. The project offered the chance for clubs to apply for a package of support related to delivering athletics for disabled people.
Inspiration Clubs represents a fantastic opportunity for clubs to improve their current disability provision and share expertise with neighbouring clubs, or, for clubs who have no experience of engaging disabled athletes, to start developing coaches and volunteers to do so.
