Team Personal Best were pleased to be able to be invited to visit the Millwall Community Trust, Community Athletics event at the Southwark Park track this week.
Participants were invited from a number of local day centres and groups who support adults with learning disabilities, including the Southwark based Bede House and the Bromley based Brighter Horizons. This was the first opportunity for these participants to visit and make use of the recently opened athletics track and was the finale for a programme of free athletics training sessions, delivered by coaches from the Millwall Community Trust over the summer, with funding from the Mayor of London’s Community Athletics Fund.
The community event offered sixty participants the chance to compete in various different events including; long jump, high jump, sprinting and throwing, with medals being presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and participation medals for runners-up.
Ben Perryman, the organiser and Disability Sports Development Officer for Millwall Community Trust, told Team Personal Best that it was an amazing day and good to see so many people enjoying taking part and with a smile on their face. He also thanked the GLA for providing the grant which enabled the club to deliver the project and confirmed that the feedback from all the participants was very positive.
A photographer from Southwark News was also on hand to record the medal presentations and a news story about the event will appear in next week’s edition.
